Let's Not Be Heisty
Ben enters his bank to pay in a cheque. The cashier initially tries to get him to leave and eventually produces a sawn-off shotgun – Joan is one of a duo robbing the bank. Gary, her husband, has the hostages in an interview room. Gary takes Ben to join the other hostages – Peter, the manager, Belinda the Chief Cashier and Jim, a customer.
At the bank, Jim has a plan to overpower the robbers. Ben’s vehement refusal is overheard by Gary who immediately takes Ben out of the room into the bank lobby. As he does, Janey arrives and, after they hear that the police have the place surrounded, she and Ben are put back in the hostage room.
At home, Penny a very pretty Family Liaison Officer calls, initially, to see Susan, but Michael persuades her to stay.
Joan and Gary, constantly arguing, tell Ben to answer the phone and talk to the police. Half way through, to Joan’s and Gary’s fury, Ben puts the phone down refusing their terms – he is The Negotiator.
Penny tells Michael that they know that Janey has also been taken hostage but she thinks she’s is making a mess of her first job as a liaison officer, so it’s Michael’s turn to comfort her.
At the bank, a discussion between the hostages as to whom should be released to the police in exchange for food is decided when Janey tells Ben that she has parked his car on a double yellow line.
Jim tries to jump Gary but slips, and it is left to Belinda to grab the gun; unfortunately, Joan reveals that she is not stupid enough to give Gary a loaded gun. This leads to a big argument between them and, this time, Ben’s mediation leads them to make up just as the police storm the bank. In the melee, Ben sets off the security dye in the bank’s money bags.
He returns home, literally red-faced, and Michael surreptitiously persuades Ben silently to disappear upstairs as Penny continues to comfort him on the sofa.
