Episode Summary

Ben is excited at seeing old college friend Charlie, who is visiting from America, but Susan asks that he stay around long enough to meet Roger’s mum, Nerys, who is coming to meet Abi for the first time.

At breakfast, Janey asks for ten-thousand pounds to invest in her friend’s retro clothes shop – knowing that her parents were unlikely to give her the loan, she has set up a meeting at a bank.
Charlie arrives to talk to Susan before meeting up again with Ben – he has had a sex-change operation and is now known as Charlotte! Knowing this might be difficult for Ben to comprehend, she asks for Susan’s help in breaking the news to him - but when she tries to do so, Ben is too interested in his golf-putting practice to pay any attention.

The next day, Abi is preparing a meal, hoping to impress Roger’s Mum with her cooking, but when Nerys arrives, she slyly turns the oven thermostat up, thereby burning Abi’s hash. That evening, Nerys toasts the happy couple and announces her wedding present is the gift of a house and a dental practice for Roger – but in Wales.. Ben is the only one who appears delighted at this news of their impending move.

Finally, Charlie arrives to meet up with Ben – who duly faints in surprise at the transformation. Ben then flounders when asked to give her away at her forthcoming wedding, and doesn’t feel he can hang out with Charlie like he used to. Indeed, he is more than encouraging when Charlie and Susan decide to go shopping together. In the meantime, Alfie has taken a shine to Charlie.

Upon their return, Susan tackles Nerys about her strong motherly hold over Roger – and writes an upset Janey a ten-thousand pound cheque to prove she herself is a good mother!

Roger finally stands up to his mother and tells her he and Abi won’t be moving to Wales. Nerys promptly accuses Ben of turning Roger against her, and calls his friend Charlie a deviant. Ben is forced to defend Charlie and suggests Nerys could learn a lot about being a woman from her.

At the pub, Ben softens and agrees to give Charlie away at her wedding, but he will have to make do with being a bridesmaid instead as Susan has already accepted the role.

Back home, he is exasperated on learning that Abi and Roger are not moving to Wales after their wedding, Janey is exasperated when she realises Ben won’t counter-sign her cheque, and Alfie reveals that Charlie has surprised him!
