The Wax Job
Ben and Susan both have cause to celebrate in this episode as she has been promoted to run the art gallery, and Ben has sold his business to Cavitex, a large dental conglomerate.
Susan laughs as he reveals that he is going to take up a new hobby – creating military dioramas with figures he will paint himself.
Roger tells Ben that he is staying on with Cavitex, but Ben will not be persuaded and leaves Cavitex’s Mr Griffiths in no doubt what he thinks of them.
Ben moves Alfie out of his room in order to use it as a hobby room, and Alfie has to move in with a furious Michael. Ben starts on his new hobby, but his enthusiasm wanes as he discovers how long it takes to paint each figure, and his senses start suffering from the inhalation of paint fumes.
Susan has no luck trying to find a suitable assistant – even turning Abi down when she had only called in with a congratulations card - and, having sacked everyone else, has to organize every aspect of the new exhibition herself.
Janey, while trying to help with the boys’ relationship, discovers she may have made a mistake finishing with her latest boyfriend. She decides to renew the friendship but it doesn’t work out.
Ben offers to help Susan get the gallery ready and he polishes the floor, while she goes off to get flowers. He gets so carried away in a dance routine with the floor polisher that he over-polishes the floor with the result that hardly anyone can stand on it, and the resultant damage is a disaster.
Ben tries to cheer Susan with the Cavitex cheque, but it is nowhere near the amount he was expecting, and he is forced to return to his surgery and ask for a job. Mr Griffith forces him to have his photo taken with ‘Bristles the Bear’ – who turns out to be Roger.
